One experience, several systems
A customer sees a checkout or transfer button. Behind it may sit a bank account, a payment processor, a network and a settlement system. The interface and the underlying payment rail are different things.
Authorization is not the same as settlement
An approval message and the final movement of funds serve different purposes. When comparing payment services, ask about settlement, availability, fees, returns and dispute rules—not only how quickly a confirmation appears.
Instant payments have their own infrastructure
The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service enables participating depository institutions to offer instant payments. It provides interbank clearing and settlement around the clock. Customers access services through participating financial institutions, rather than opening a consumer account with FedNow.
Match the method to the situation
The planned course compares cards, ACH, wires and instant-payment systems. For any method, examine who can initiate a payment, how to verify the recipient, what fees apply and what happens if something goes wrong. Speed alone does not establish safety.
